When selecting an aluminum sliding window system for your next project, the "name game" can be challenging. Aluminum sliding windows have a unique identifying system, and these few easy tips can simplify horizontal sliding window selection.

The X's and O's of Aluminum Horizontal Sliding Windows

At the most basic level: "XOX window" is a term used to describe a specific configuration of a sliding window. Here's what it means:

  • •   The term "XOX" refers to the arrangement of the window panels as viewed from the exterior.
  • •   "X" represents an operable (sliding) sash or panel.
  • •   "O" represents a fixed (non-operable) panel.

So, in an "XOX" sliding window, you have three panels: the left and right panels are operable (they can slide), and the center panel is fixed. This configuration is common in wider windows where you want ventilation on each side with a fixed central view.

Additional Game Tips:

  • •   Logical people (such as yourself!) would think the "0" would stand for operable. But X stands for operable – go figure.
  • •   You can't have two XX's together. X's (operable) must always be separated with a 0 (fixed). Two operable panels next to each other wouldn't function correctly.
  • •   When designing your slider, make sure you imagine yourself on the outside of the building. That way there is no confusion on left or right sliding panels.

The X and O's of Design

There are examples of a few types of common sliding windows:

Single-Slider Windows (XO or OX)

These have one operable window and one fixed window. The XO or OX refers to the operable side of the window,

with the "x" representing the operable side.

Triple-Slider Windows (XOX)

These have two operable windows and a fixed window. The "X" represents the operable windows.

X Marks the Spot

Selecting the right aluminum sliding window configuration can feel like a complex puzzle. Understanding the simple "XOX" terminology can make your decision-making process smoother. Whether you need a single-slider with one operable panel or a triple-slider with two, knowing that the "X" represents the operable parts and the "O" the fixed ones can guide you to the perfect fit for your project. The game of selecting sliding windows is now one you can win with confidence!
