Winco’s Windows Flood Samuel J Green Charter School Students in Sunlight

Samuel J. Green Charter School, grades K-12, opened a week before Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005. Located in uptown New Orleans, the school had some flooding, but was spared the major damage that the Category 5 hurricane left in lower parishes. The school reopened in January 2006, after overcoming its own obstacles.

The broken windowpanes of the original, 1920s-vintage wooden windows were last updated with Plexiglass replacements. Cheap, fast and yellow from age, the windows no longer provided natural light into classrooms, which research shows to be beneficial to the learning environment.

It was time for better windows that would provide daylighting, energy efficiency and proven hurricane wind and water infiltration resistance. Winco’s Series 4500 Thermal AW-50 Double Hung Windows were installed.

In collaboration with Verges Rome Architects and Southern Walls & Windows, Winco was able to replicate the school’s original window profiles and give them a bone white finish with half screens and grids.

The results of this restoration are welcoming sunlight flooding into the classrooms and an exterior that looks clean and bright. Along with exceptional students and staff, Samuel J. Green Charter School now has a building to be proud of - both inside and out.
