Nipher Middle School Addition Highlights Duality of Windows

When Kirkwood School District administrators were planning an addition to Nipher Middle School in Kirkwood, Missouri, they set two criteria:  replicating the school’s historic look and creating an area for use as a storm shelter.

A stately brick with rows of white framed windows reflecting the style of the time, the school opened its doors in September 1922 as Kirkwood High School. A south wing was added in 1930 for a junior high and was named in honor of Francis E. Nipher, a physics professor at Washington University.

To replicate the historic look on the new addition, Winco’s 1150S casement window series were used on the first and second floors of the back of the building. The windows feature eight over eight built-in muntins and a header panel in a bone white finish. The windows provide the desired timeless aesthetic, along with improved energy efficiency and easy maintenance.

While the new wing was not built as a storm shelter, it does include a safe area for occupant protection during a storm. Here, Winco installed its FEMA 361 - ICC 500  window series, featuring a sturdy frame and impact-resistant laminated glass that meet the ICC 500 code specifications for storm shelters. These windows also feature the eight over eight built-in muntins in a bone white finish for a seamless look with added protection.

Both window series —1150S and FEMA 361 - ICC 500—provide Nipher Middle School with the historic look and storm shelter space administrators set out to achieve.
